it welcome to derry episode 4

The fourth episode of IT: Welcome to Derry has just dropped, and fans are reeling from what many are calling the most disturbing installment of the series so far. Pennywise’s terrifying return has taken the horror to new heights, and this week’s storyline proved especially harrowing as it explored one character’s deepest insecurities in a way that left viewers both shocked and emotionally rattled.

Following the highly anticipated premiere, creator Andy Muschietti and actress Matilda Lawler—who plays Marge—sat down to discuss the episode’s chilling events. Their insights shed new light not only on Marge’s traumatic experiences but also on how this week’s episode connects to the show’s season finale.

Episode four zeroes in on Marge’s growing fear and the insecurity she feels about her “Coke bottle” glasses, a detail that has been subtly highlighted throughout the season. The new glasses make her eyes appear unusually large, and as her discomfort intensifies, Pennywise seizes the opportunity to exploit her vulnerability. The entity manifests through hallucinations that distort her appearance, making her eyes seem to swell and bulge grotesquely from their sockets.

This psychological assault drives Marge into panic. In one of the most disturbing scenes of the series so far, she becomes convinced that the only way to stop the horror is to harm herself. As she attempts to cut her eyes out, Lily—portrayed by Clara Stack—intervenes just in time. Her intervention prevents permanent damage, but Marge still injures one of her eyes, marking a turning point for her character both physically and emotionally.

Speaking candidly about the episode, Matilda Lawler explained that her character’s fears are rooted in issues many teenagers face. “It preys on her insecurities that every teenage girl has at some point,” she said. Despite the horror, Lawler believes the storyline serves as a reminder of the emotional and social pressures young people face, especially those who feel different or left out.

She elaborated further in her interview with TV Insider: “The scare scene with the eyes does have a centering effect on Marge and kind of causes her to reflect on her relationships and see the truth in a way. She sees that she belongs with her friend Lily and with the Losers, and it’s okay for her to find herself elsewhere—not in the group that everyone thinks she should be in.” According to Lawler, the traumatic event becomes a catalyst for Marge’s self-realization, pushing her to embrace her true friendships and shed the pressure of fitting into someone else’s expectations.

While Lawler focused on the emotional core of the episode, series creator Andy Muschietti teased something much bigger. He revealed that Marge’s glasses—and her fear of them—were not merely symbolic or visually distinctive. Instead, they are tied to a major plot point that will be revealed only in the season’s final episode.

“There’s a specific reason that’s not going to be revealed until the very last episode for which she is wearing the Coke bottle glasses,” Muschietti revealed. “And so we decided that [her fear] was about the eyes.”

This cryptic explanation has already ignited fan theories across social media. Some believe the glasses may be connected to Marge’s ability to perceive Pennywise in a way others cannot, while others suspect her vision might play a significant role in the finale’s supernatural mystery. Whatever the truth, Muschietti’s hint suggests that episode four is just the beginning of a much deeper revelation.

As the season progresses, Welcome to Derry continues to build on the lore established in Stephen King’s IT, expanding the story’s mythology while introducing new characters who carry their own burdens and fears. Episode four stands out not only for its unforgettable scare sequences but also for its emotional depth. Marge’s journey, marked by insecurity, self-discovery and survival, adds a powerful layer to the show’s narrative—one that many viewers have found relatable despite the supernatural horror surrounding it.

With only a few episodes left, the tension is rising, and fans are bracing themselves for what promises to be a shocking finale. Muschietti’s revelation ensures that all eyes—quite literally—will be on Marge as the mystery unfolds. Until then, viewers can only speculate about the true purpose of her glasses and what Pennywise has planned for the Losers next.
