A fabricated notification claiming to announce Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) appointment has been circulating on social media platforms, intensifying concerns about misinformation as the country awaits the official government announcement. The fake document emerged amid growing public speculation over the delayed notification process.
The CDF position was established through Pakistan’s 27th Constitutional Amendment, replacing the abolished Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee role. Field Marshal Asim Munir is expected to simultaneously hold both the Army Chief and CDF positions under the new structure, which grants a five-year tenure commencing from the official notification date.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif dismissed circulating rumors and urged citizens to avoid speculation. He confirmed the appointment process has been initiated and emphasized that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would issue the official notification upon his return from the United Kingdom, where he underwent medical examinations. The minister characterized social media speculation as irresponsible and unnecessary.
The November 29 deadline passed without official announcement, marking the expiration date of Munir’s original three-year army chief term. Legal experts debate whether a fresh notification is technically required, given that 2024 amendments to the Pakistan Army Act already extended service chiefs’ tenures to five years through a retrospective clause.
Social media platforms witnessed an explosion of unauthorized content, including fake notifications, memes, and unverified claims about the appointment. The misinformation prompted government officials to issue clarifications and warnings against sharing unverified documents. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar assured the public that Munir is already functioning in his capacity and the formal notification would follow administrative procedures.
The delay complicated Pakistan’s military restructuring framework, which military planners had anticipated would proceed seamlessly. The CDF role carries significant authority, including oversight of multi-domain integration and command coordination across Pakistan’s armed forces. Additionally, the appointment of the National Strategic Command commander, responsible for nuclear oversight, awaits the CDF notification.
Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi attempted to quell speculation by informally announcing Munir as the CDF, though this lacked official documentation.
