TEHRAN – Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared on May 4 that a “new equation” is emerging in the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran continues to assert control over the strategic waterway amid heightened military tensions with the United States .

Speaking in an interview, Ghalibaf emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in shaping the strait’s future. “Our cooperation with countries in the region is expanding, and God willing, this cooperation will continue and yield results in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” he stated .

The Iranian parliament speaker strongly condemned the US-led “Project Freedom” mission – a naval initiative launched May 3 designed to re-establish freedom of navigation through the strait, which has been largely closed since late February . Ghalibaf accused the United States of “reckless behaviour” and attempting to dominate the region, warning that “the issue of Hormuz will not return to its pre-war state” .

Ghalibaf also addressed the broader regional situation, condemning Israel’s military offensive in Rafah and the ongoing “tragedy” in Gaza . He called on Muslim nations to unite and pressure the Israeli government to end its attacks, stating that “there is an emerging consensus” among Islamic countries .

His remarks follow Iran’s recent military response to “Project Freedom” – including cruise missile, rocket, and drone attacks near US warships – and a drone strike on the UAE’s Fujairah Oil Industry Zone . The escalation has driven crude prices above 120perbarrel,withBrentcrudetradingat120perbarrel,withBrentcrudetradingat121.48 intraday on May 4 .

Despite the rising rhetoric, Ghalibaf noted that indirect negotiations with the United States are continuing through Omani and Pakistani mediators, though a second round of direct talks remains unconfirmed .
