WEB DESK: Joshua Bassett is opening up about one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing how a struggle with ketamine addiction spiraled before eventually pushing him to seek help.
Candid Details in New Memoir
The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star shared candid details about his experience in his new memoir, “Rookie: My Public, Private and Secret Life,” describing what he called a personal “breaking point” after years of struggling to cope.
Reflecting on His Addiction Spiral
Speaking about the severity of his addiction, Bassett revealed that his ketamine use escalated rapidly as his tolerance increased. The actor said what once required only a small amount eventually became far more consuming, with his addiction peaking at consuming six baggies of ketamine each night.
Bassett described the period as an “out of control spiral,” explaining that he increasingly felt unable to cope or function unless he was under the influence. According to the 25-year-old, things eventually reached a stage where he realized he needed professional help after those closest to him noticed he was struggling. Friends and members of his inner circle, he said, recognized that he was “drowning” while trying to manage emotional pain and difficult experiences.
The Moment He Reached a ‘Breaking Point’
Bassett said his addiction ultimately forced him into a turning point that reshaped his life. The actor also spoke about using ayahuasca, a psychedelic treatment sometimes explored in addiction recovery and mental health settings, describing the experience as deeply meaningful. Bassett said the experience gave him a sense of peace he had previously searched for elsewhere and spoke about what he described as a profound spiritual moment involving Jesus.
Advocating for Compassion
Since seeking help, Bassett said he has become more passionate about speaking openly about addiction and encouraging compassion toward those struggling with substance abuse. He stressed the importance of connection and support, saying addiction is often linked to trauma, loneliness, and emotional pain. Rather than shame, he suggested people battling addiction need understanding and patience as they navigate recovery.
The memoir comes as Bassett continues to reflect publicly on his personal life, years after finding himself at the center of intense public scrutiny during his rise to fame through Disney’s hit musical series.
