Hafiz Naeem Opposes Emergency in KP

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Friday opposed the imposition of governor’s rule or emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying his party would not support any move that suspends or undermines the Constitution.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Rehman said JI would participate in the proposed all-parties conference (APC) to develop a national consensus on security, economic challenges and the political process.

He said Pakistan belonged to its 250 million people and called for a shared national agenda.

JI Calls for National Political Dialogue

Rehman said the government should have initiated meaningful negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other opposition parties earlier, arguing that delays had contributed to the current political tensions.

He welcomed the formation of a committee for dialogue but stressed that it should deliver practical results rather than become a symbolic exercise.

JI, he added, wanted negotiations to address broader democratic, political and constitutional concerns.

Support for PTI’s Negotiation Demands

Rehman also backed several demands raised by PTI concerning its incarcerated founder, Imran Khan.

He called for party members to be allowed to meet Khan and said concerns about his health should be addressed. He also urged authorities to implement the Supreme Court’s decision concerning Khan in letter and spirit.

The JI chief further called for attention to the health and legal concerns of detained PTI leaders and women, including Khan’s sisters and Dr Yasmin Rashid.

He urged authorities to ensure that courts could function properly and that unnecessary obstacles to bail were avoided.

Talks Proposed Amid October 4 March

The statements come amid heightened tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration over security issues and PTI’s planned October 4 march towards Islamabad.

Reports have indicated that emergency measures in the province have been discussed at the federal level, although no immediate decision had been announced in the report provided.

The ruling coalition and PTI were scheduled to hold talks on Friday as political pressure increased ahead of the planned march.

President, Prime Minister Discuss Political Situation

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also discussed the country’s political and security situation on Thursday, with particular attention to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Rehman said JI had discussed the situation with PTI members and that they had not rejected negotiations.

He maintained that a broader political understanding was needed to improve stability and strengthen the constitutional process.
