Trump Offers to Help Resolve Kashmir Dispute After India-Pakistan Tensions

A precarious calm settled along the India-Pakistan border on Sunday after intense cross-border fighting that lasted several days and claimed nearly 70 lives. The latest skirmishes marked the worst escalation in nearly 30 years between the nuclear-armed neighbours, sparking global concern and urgent calls for de-escalation.

The ceasefire, brokered after diplomatic engagement and pressure from the United States, appears to be holding — although sporadic violations and shelling were still reported, particularly in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Historical Context: A Longstanding Dispute Over Kashmir

India and Pakistan, which emerged as separate nations from British colonial rule in 1947, have fought three wars — two of which were over Kashmir. The region remains a flashpoint, claimed in full by both but controlled in parts by each. Tensions have remained high since the insurgency erupted in Indian-administered Kashmir in 1989, which New Delhi blames on Pakistan. Islamabad denies any involvement beyond political and moral support for Kashmiri self-determination.

The latest violence erupted two weeks after a terrorist attack in IIOJK’s Pahalgam, where 26 Hindu civilians were killed — a tragedy that further strained ties.

Four Days of Fighting: Missiles, Drones and Blackouts

Over the past week, both nations launched attacks on each other’s military installations using drones, artillery, and air-defence systems. Cities near the border experienced nightly blackouts, loud explosions, and fear among civilians.

According to officials, dozens were killed during the four-day exchange. In Pakistan-administered Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), limited shelling was reported in Bhimber on Saturday night, but no casualties occurred.

In India’s border areas, including Amritsar, power was restored and normalcy was gradually returning by Sunday morning. Sirens signaled an end to curfews, and locals cautiously resumed their daily routines.

Trump: “Will Work to Provide a Solution Regarding Kashmir”

U.S. President Donald Trump praised both Indian and Pakistani leadership for agreeing to halt hostilities and expressed a willingness to mediate the Kashmir dispute.

“While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great nations,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Additionally, I will work with you both to see if… a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”

His comments mark a rare direct mention of the Kashmir issue from a U.S. president, and may signal increased American engagement in regional peace efforts.

Civilians Caught in the Crossfire

The human cost of the conflict was palpable on both sides of the border. In Amritsar, residents described days of fear and uncertainty.

“We have been shutting our shops very early and there was an uncertainty,” said Satvir Singh Alhuwalia, a 48-year-old shopkeeper. “I am happy that at least there will be no bloodshed on both sides.”

Security guard Guruman Singh echoed the sentiment:

“More than me, my family is happy because my children and wife have been calling me every hour to check on me. Thank God the ceasefire happened.”

In Pakistan, communities along the Line of Control also reported nights of sleeplessness under the threat of shelling. Local authorities confirmed that while Bhimber saw some overnight firing, no major damage or casualties occurred elsewhere in AJK.

The Fragility of Peace

Despite the relative calm on Sunday, experts and residents remain wary. The ceasefire, while welcome, is fragile and could unravel with a single provocation. The pattern of brief de-escalations followed by renewed violence has long plagued the Kashmir region.

While world leaders, including Trump, have urged restraint and diplomacy, the path to lasting peace remains uncertain. With nuclear weapons in play and nationalist sentiment high on both sides, the cost of another escalation could be catastrophic.
