Seawater Turns Pink at Gadani Jetty: EPD Report Attributes Phenomenon to Microbial Activity

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Balochistan has issued an investigative report on the unusual pink coloration of seawater observed recently at the Gadani Jetty, a coastal area known for shipbreaking and fishing activities.

According to Deputy Director of Environment Imran Saeed Kakar, the discoloration was triggered by prolonged water stagnation, which led to natural microbiological transformations in the coastal environment.

“The water had remained still for an extended period, allowing certain microorganisms to flourish. This resulted in the pink hue,” said Kakar in the official statement.

Microbial Bloom Behind the Color Shift

Environmental experts associated with the report have identified the growth of halophilic bacteria—microorganisms that thrive in high-salinity conditions—as the primary driver of the change. These bacteria, along with other salt-tolerant microbes, are known to produce pigments that can visibly alter water color.

Such microbial blooms are rare but not unprecedented, especially in regions where seawater circulation is low and salinity is high. However, experts warn that while the sight may appear harmless, exposure to these microbes could pose mild health risks, particularly for individuals with skin sensitivities or weakened immune systems.

Public Advisory and Monitoring

Though no immediate danger has been declared, the EPD has urged the public—especially local fishermen and swimmers—to avoid direct contact with the discolored water until further notice.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation. While this is a natural phenomenon, we are taking precautionary measures to ensure there is no threat to public health or marine life,” Kakar added.

Regional Environmental Concerns

The incident has drawn attention to broader environmental issues along Balochistan’s coastline, including the need for better water flow management, pollution control, and marine ecosystem monitoring. Gadani, a hub for shipbreaking, often faces scrutiny over its marine and environmental impact.

Environmentalists have called for increased scientific research and regular sampling of coastal waters to detect and respond to unusual biological or chemical changes early on.
