The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has nominated Chaudhry Yasin for the Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister slot, signalling a strategic in-house leadership shift.

In a strategic move to reshape the leadership in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has finalized Chaudhry Yasin as its nominee for the AJK Prime Minister slot. The decision emerged during a high-level PPP meeting chaired by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, with the party’s central leadership and AJK affiliates present. Several contenders — including Latif Akbar, Faisal Mumtaz Rathore and Sardar Yaqoob Khan — were discussed before Yasin’s name was confirmed.

The development follows a meeting in Islamabad involving the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League‑Nawaz (PML-N) on the region’s political climate and the possibility of an internal government change. In that meeting, PML-N disclosed its decision to support a no-confidence motion against incumbent Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar‑ul‑Haq while staying out of the new government.

With the AJK Legislative Assembly comprising 52 members and a simple majority requiring 27 seats, the PPP currently holds 17. An additional 10 lawmakers from a forward bloc have pledged their support, bringing its effective strength to 36 — comfortably above the threshold. The incumbent group retains around 10 members, with minor parties occupying remaining seats.

PTI’s AJK secretary-general criticised both major parties as “two sides of the same coin,” though the PPP hopes to consolidate power and execute an expedited leadership transition through its strengthened majority and the backing of allied blocs.
