AI Startup Perplexity Eyes TikTok Acquisition, Promises Open-Source Algorithm

In a bold move, AI startup Perplexity has expressed interest in acquiring the popular video-sharing app TikTok, promising to overhaul its recommendation algorithm and make it open-source. This announcement comes at a time when TikTok is facing intense scrutiny in the United States, with a looming deadline to sever ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or face a potential ban.

In a blog post, Perplexity outlined its vision of combining its AI-powered internet search capabilities with TikTok’s extensive video library. The startup believes that by integrating its cutting-edge “answer engine” with TikTok’s content, it can create the “best search experience in the world.” Perplexity’s proposal also includes rebuilding TikTok’s algorithm from the ground up while ensuring the platform is no longer controlled by foreign governments or monopolistic entities.

A Potential Game-Changer for TikTok’s Algorithm

Perplexity emphasized that it is uniquely positioned to manage the future of TikTok’s algorithm without creating a monopoly, claiming that its technical capabilities, combined with its stance on “Little Tech independence,” make it an ideal candidate for the acquisition. The startup’s proposal to make TikTok’s “For You” recommendation feed open-source would allow greater transparency and control for users, offering an alternative to current content algorithms controlled by large tech companies.

“We’re dealing with four different groups interested in acquiring TikTok,” President Donald Trump revealed earlier this month. “And a lot of people want it, and it’s up to me.” Among the other potential buyers are major tech companies like Microsoft and Oracle, as well as a consortium led by internet personality MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), along with an initiative called The People’s Bid for TikTok, launched by Frank McCourt’s Project Liberty.

Perplexity’s proposal sets itself apart from these contenders by pledging to decentralize control of TikTok’s algorithm and make it more transparent, arguing that any acquisition by a consortium of investors could leave ByteDance with ongoing control, while a purchase by a competitor could lead to a monopolization of the short-form video and information space.

The Battle Over TikTok’s Future in the US

TikTok’s future in the United States has been in jeopardy due to national security concerns regarding its Chinese ownership. In January 2025, a US law was enacted that requires TikTok to sever ties with ByteDance or face a nationwide ban. The law, which became effective on January 19, raises concerns that the Chinese government could exploit TikTok for spying or influencing US public opinion.

Former President Trump attempted to ban TikTok in the US during his first term, citing national security threats. While TikTok temporarily shut down in the US and was removed from app stores in the lead-up to the deadline, the service was restored after Trump took office in January 2025. TikTok made its comeback to the US in February, resuming service and returning to app stores.

However, the platform’s future remains uncertain, and the company is under intense pressure to comply with the US government’s demands for divestment. Despite the ongoing situation, TikTok has not indicated a strong desire to sell the app.

Perplexity’s Vision for a More Transparent TikTok

Perplexity’s proposal to make TikTok’s recommendation feed open-source aligns with its broader philosophy of building a more independent and transparent tech ecosystem. By giving users the ability to cross-reference information as they watch videos, Perplexity aims to foster a more informed and responsible user experience.

The startup also pledged to move TikTok’s infrastructure to data centers in the United States, with the platform being maintained under US oversight. This approach would not only address concerns over Chinese control but also provide a more secure and transparent environment for US users.

Global Implications and the Future of TikTok

While TikTok’s algorithm has been widely praised for its ability to engage users, it has also come under scrutiny for its lack of transparency and its potential for manipulation. Perplexity’s proposal to rebuild the app’s algorithm and make it open-source could be a game-changer, not only for TikTok but for the broader social media landscape, which is grappling with growing concerns about data privacy, government interference, and monopolistic practices by tech giants.

As the deadline approaches for TikTok to comply with US law, the platform’s future hangs in the balance. With several contenders vying for control, Perplexity’s vision of a decentralized, user-driven TikTok offers a refreshing alternative to the status quo. However, it remains to be seen whether this proposal will gain traction or whether TikTok will ultimately find a buyer that can satisfy both US regulatory demands and the platform’s global ambitions.
