Vijay Shah, a cabinet minister in Madhya Pradesh and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), found himself at the center of a political firestorm after making a highly controversial and communal remark against Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a decorated officer in the Indian Army.

During a public address following the conclusion of India’s Operation Sindoor, Shah stated that Col Qureshi had been sent as a symbolic act of vengeance, referring to her as a “sister from the same community as terrorists.”

The Controversial Statement That Sparked Outrage

The remarks, which have since gone viral on social media, were delivered during a speech in which Shah attempted to highlight India’s retaliatory response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack. He said:

“They (terrorists) killed our Hindu brothers by making them remove their clothes. PM Modi ji responded by sending their (terrorists’) sister in an Army plane to strike them in their houses. They (terrorists) made our sisters widows, so Modi ji sent the sisters of their community to strip them and teach them a lesson.”

The comment, perceived as a deeply communal and misogynistic attack, was seen as targeting Col Qureshi’s religious identity, drawing widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum and civil society.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi: A Trailblazer in Uniform

Colonel Sofia Qureshi is a respected officer in the Indian Army Corps of Signals, having joined in 1999. She became a national figure in 2016 as the first Indian woman to lead a multinational military exercise under the United Nations banner. Known for her professionalism and commitment, she recently conducted press briefings during Operation Sindoor, India’s counter-terrorism operation in response to the Pahalgam attack.

Backlash and Demand for Shah’s Removal

The backlash against Shah was swift and intense:

  • Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the minister’s comments, calling them “derogatory, shameful, and cheap” and demanded his immediate removal from the cabinet.
  • In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kharge wrote: “A minister of the BJP government of Madhya Pradesh has made a very derogatory remark about our brave daughter Colonel Sofia Qureshi. The terrorists wanted to divide the country, but the country stood united during Operation Sindoor.”
  • The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee also accused Shah of making an “indecent and hate-filled” statement that undermines the honor of the armed forces, national unity, and women’s dignity.

Apology Issued Amid Party Reprimand

Following widespread condemnation, Vijay Shah issued an apology, stating:

“If anyone is hurt by my statement, I apologize ten times. I respect Colonel Qureshi more than my own sister.”

Despite the apology, damage control efforts continued within the BJP, with the party’s Madhya Pradesh general secretary Hitanand Sharma summoning Shah to the state headquarters in Bhopal. Sources report that Shah was reprimanded and later met with BJP state president Vishnu Dutt Sharma.

Party insiders confirmed that the leadership has taken the incident seriously and is reviewing potential disciplinary action against Shah to mitigate political fallout ahead of upcoming elections.

Criticism from Within the BJP

The controversy didn’t just draw fire from the opposition. Several BJP leaders and party workers reportedly expressed discomfort over Shah’s remarks, fearing it could alienate moderate voters and damage the party’s image, especially given Col Qureshi’s stature and the military’s revered position in Indian society.

Civil Society and Veterans React

Retired armed forces personnel and activists also condemned Shah’s remarks, calling them deeply insulting to the armed forces’ secular fabric. Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain tweeted:

“Colonel Sofia Qureshi represents the best of the Indian Army—merit, discipline, and patriotism. To communalize her service is a disservice to the entire institution.”

Women’s rights groups labeled the remarks sexist and communal, demanding a broader discussion on political accountability and hate speech in public discourse.
