Pakistan Weekly Inflation Rises 0.21%, Chicken Prices Surge

Weekly Inflation Increases 0.21%

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s weekly inflation rose 0.21% in the week ended October 1, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks short-term price changes in essential commodities, recorded an 11.53% year-on-year increase.

Prices of 20 items increased, 10 declined, while the remaining items in the 51-item basket showed no change.

Chicken Prices Record Biggest Weekly Increase

Chicken recorded the largest weekly price increase, rising 7.25%.

Other items that became more expensive included:

  • Garlic: 1.85%
  • Gram pulse: 1.30%
  • LPG: 1.17%
  • Eggs: 0.72%
  • Rice: 0.55%

Prices of onions, washing soap and wheat flour also increased during the week.

Diesel, Petrol and Sugar Become Cheaper

Several essential commodities recorded weekly price declines.

Diesel prices fell 3.43%, while banana prices decreased by 1.52% and sugar by 1.05%.

Potato prices declined 0.96%, while petrol became 0.65% cheaper during the reporting week.

Onion Prices Rise 114% Year-on-Year

On a year-on-year basis, onions recorded the highest increase, with prices rising 114.20%.

Other significant annual increases included:

  • LPG: 66.59%
  • Electricity tariffs: 58.59%
  • Diesel: 44.50%
  • Petrol: 44.05%
  • Wheat flour: 32.65%

The figures reflect substantial increases in the cost of several essential commodities and energy-related items compared with the same period last year.

Tomatoes, Potatoes and Sugar Record Annual Declines

Despite increases in several commodities, some food items became considerably cheaper over the past year.

According to the PBS report, tomato prices declined 45.52%, while potatoes fell 39.54%.

Sugar prices decreased by 21.95%, and egg prices were 17.47% lower than a year earlier.

The latest figures show that price movements varied across food and energy items, with some commodities recording sharp annual increases while others experienced significant declines.
