As tensions simmer between nuclear-armed neighbours Pakistan and India following a US-brokered ceasefire, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s military, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, has declared that any ceasefire violation by India would trigger a “brutal” and swift response.
Speaking to Sky News, the Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said, “Anyone who tries to violate our territory and integrity and sovereignty, our response will be brutal.” The message from Pakistan’s military leadership is clear: any attempt to undermine its sovereignty will be met with full force.
Chaudhry also cautioned that any further escalation between the two nuclear powers could have “devastating consequences”, not only for the belligerents but for the entire South Asian region.
India’s Actions Seen as Aggressive Provocation
The most recent escalation in the decades-old India-Pakistan rivalry began on May 7, when at least 31 Pakistani civilians, including children, were killed in what Islamabad described as “unprovoked Indian cross-border attacks.”
The Indian Air Force (IAF) reportedly launched missile attacks on key Pakistani airbases, including Nur Khan, Murid, and Shorkot, using fighter aircraft. Additionally, India deployed drones, including Israeli-made IAI Heron UAVs, across Pakistani airspace. Pakistan’s forces shot down nearly 80 drones, along with six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafale jets.
Pakistan Retaliates with ‘Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos’
In response to the aggression, Pakistan launched “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos” in the early hours of Saturday, striking Indian military bases, missile storage sites, and other strategic assets. These retaliatory strikes marked one of the most serious military escalations between the two countries in recent years.
The ISPR confirmed the use of precision-guided munitions and long-range missiles that successfully hit critical Indian installations, underscoring Pakistan’s military readiness and technological capabilities.
Ceasefire Mediated by United States
Following several days of intense military engagement, US President Donald Trump announced that Pakistan and India had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire.”
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, crediting diplomacy and “great intelligence” for the breakthrough.
Pakistan’s Position: Peace with Strength
In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s position of peace through strength. “Pakistan made a deliberate decision to pay in the same coin, which their enemy knew very well — with force,” he said.
The prime minister stressed that Pakistan does not seek war but will never tolerate aggression or threats to its sovereignty. “If anyone challenges the sovereignty, they stand like an iron wall and overpower their enemies,” he stated proudly, while praising the courage and professionalism of Pakistan’s armed forces.
Pakistan Denounces Indian Narrative on Kashmir
DG ISPR Lt Gen Chaudhry also highlighted India’s continued militarisation of Kashmir, condemning the harassment of the Kashmiri population and India’s claim that the issue is purely internal. He reminded the global community that the Kashmir dispute is subject to United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, which call for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide their own future.
US-Brokered Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan Extended Until May 18
“India is trying to mislead the world by labeling the Kashmir issue as internal, while simultaneously using force and oppression to silence the Kashmiri voice,” he asserted.
Pakistan Accuses India of Provocation Over Pahalgam Incident
The prime minister also accused India of using the Pahalgam incident as a pretext for war, even though Pakistan had offered to cooperate in a transparent international investigation.
India, instead, chose to launch missile and drone strikes across the Line of Control and other areas, targeting mosques, civilian homes, and water resources. PM Sharif called the attacks “cowardly and shameful acts of naked aggression.”
Nation Commended for Unity and Resolve
PM Sharif extended heartfelt congratulations to the nation, commending the resilience and unity displayed by citizens and soldiers alike. “What the enemy did was a cowardly and shameful act, but the brave and bold forces of Pakistan gave a very effective response which will be remembered as a chapter in modern warfare,” he said.
He also made it clear that all outstanding issues, including Kashmir, water distribution, and border disputes, must now be resolved through peaceful negotiations, not violence.
