In a distressing incident that has shaken the local community, two armed robbers snatched a purse containing Rs. 230,000 from the mother of Pakistan’s right-arm pacer, Hasan Ali, in Gujranwala. The robbery took place as she was heading to the market, a moment that quickly turned into an unfortunate ordeal.

Hasan Ali’s brother, Khurram Ali, confirmed the incident, telling the media that his mother was approached by two men riding a motorcycle. They forcefully took her purse, which contained a significant amount of cash, before fleeing the scene.

The police were immediately alerted, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the culprits. Local authorities expressed confidence that the criminals would be caught soon, as the investigation continues.

Gujranwala Police’s Efforts to Combat Property Crimes

This robbery comes in the wake of a notable decline in property crimes in Gujranwala, according to recent reports from the Gujranwala Police. Earlier this month, the police had announced a significant reduction in serious crimes against property, largely attributed to their ongoing crackdown on organized criminal gangs operating in the region.

According to data from the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, there has been a remarkable 47% drop in shop robbery incidents during the first four months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. Other property-related crimes also saw a notable decrease, including:

  • Shop dacoity: down by 20%
  • House robbery: down by 29%
  • Shop burglary: down by 11%
  • Car theft: down by 14%

These figures suggest that the police’s concerted efforts to dismantle inter-district criminal networks are beginning to show positive results.

Efforts of Gujranwala Police and the CIA

The Gujranwala Police, particularly the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), have been instrumental in this reduction. The CIA’s relentless efforts have led to the dismantling of several notorious criminal gangs operating across multiple districts.

Pakistan, Azerbaijan Strengthen Ties Amid Regional Tensions

Between January and April 2025, the police arrested 290 individuals from 113 different gangs, with recoveries of stolen property totaling Rs. 70.7 million. In total, the value of all property recovered during this period amounted to Rs. 128.8 million.

CPO Gujranwala, who credited the significant decline in property crimes to the relentless work of the police, has expressed confidence that the situation will continue to improve with continued vigilance and action against criminal elements in the area.

A Growing Concern for Public Safety

Despite these positive strides, incidents like the robbery of Hasan Ali’s mother serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that remain in ensuring public safety. While the police have made commendable progress in addressing property-related crimes, violent and opportunistic robberies still pose a threat to residents.

The robbery of a family member of a well-known public figure like Hasan Ali has also drawn significant media attention, highlighting the vulnerability of citizens even in areas that have seen a reduction in overall crime rates. Local authorities have vowed to increase their efforts to address this issue and restore a sense of safety to the community.
