Army Act and Official Secrets Act challenged in Supreme Court

KARACHI / ISLAMABAD: According to sources within the Sindh High Court (SHC), the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) has filed a petition with the Supreme Court (SC) challenging both the Army Act and the Official Secrets Act. This development occurred on Wednesday.

In the petition, the bar council has asked the apex court to declare both the Army Act and the Official Secrets Act 2023 null and void.

In another petition, the SBC is seeking a declaration that the trial of civilians by military courts goes against the constitution.

Barrister Salahuddin submitted both petitions on Wednesday on behalf of the Sindh Bar Council.

Meanwhile, in a statement commemorating Defence and Martyrs’ Day, the army chief also criticized those who attempted to undermine the strong bond between the military and the people.

“The Pakistan Army, as a national institution, foiled this sinister attempt with great patience and wisdom,” the statement quoted Gen Asim as saying.

The COAS also emphasized the importance of unity and trust between the military and the people as a great asset.
