Death toll in Morocco’s deadly earthquake surges beyond 1,000

Morocco’s Deadly Earthquake

Interior Ministry said on Saturday that the powerful earthquake, which struck Morocco, has raised the death toll to 1,037. The quake resulted in extensive destruction, and frightened residents and tourists hastily sought safety in the middle of the night.

The earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountains late on Friday night. It caused damage to historic buildings in Marrakech, the nearest city to the epicenter. The most severely affected areas are in the nearby mountains.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake had a magnitude of 6.8 and an epicenter located some 72 km (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech. The Interior Ministry reported that the quake had claimed the lives of 1,037 people, with another 672 injured.

Morocco’s deadly earthquake led to more than 1,000 casualties on Saturday.

In the village of Amizmiz near the epicenter, rescue workers used their bare hands to search through rubble.

Mohamed Azaw, a resident, described the terrifying experience, “When I felt the earth shaking beneath my feet and the house leaning, I rushed to get my kids out. But my neighbors couldn’t. Unfortunately, no one was found alive in that family. The father and son were found dead, and they are still looking for the mother and the daughter.”

Pakistani leaders offer help for deadly earthquake

Meanwhile, in a heartfelt demonstration of solidarity, Pakistan’s prominent leaders expressed their sorrow. They conveyed their condolences to Morocco on Saturday, in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake.

The earthquake, striking just after 11 p.m. local time with a magnitude of 6.8, has caused extensive destruction. It has particularly impacted remote mountain areas that were challenging to reach.

President Dr. Arif Alvi conveyed his profound sadness regarding the earthquake’s impact in Morocco. He offered heartfelt condolences to the families affected and expressed his solidarity with Morocco’s people and government

Meanwhile, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar conveyed his sorrow and sadness regarding the whole situation.

He extended condolences to Morocco and its people, highlighting Pakistan’s unwavering support during this difficult time.
