Maryam Nawaz was sworn in as Punjab’s Chief Minister on Monday, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold this position in the province. The ceremony, attended by over 1,000 guests including diplomats, celebrities, political figures, and journalists, took place at the Punjab Governor House.

Governor Baligh Ur Rehman administered the oath following Maryam’s election, amidst a boycott from the members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

Maryam’s victory in the provincial assembly elections was decisive, securing 220 votes, while her opponent from SIC, Rana Aftab Ahmad, received none due to the party’s boycott. The Speaker of the Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan, confirmed the results and invited Maryam to assume her role.

In her inaugural speech, Maryam extended an olive branch to the opposition, expressed gratitude towards her party, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Istehkam-e-Pakistan (IPP) members for their support, and dedicated her victory to the women of Pakistan. She recounted her struggles and the political challenges faced by her family, emphasizing her commitment to governance free from vengeance.

Maryam outlined her vision for Punjab, focusing on economic reforms, anti-corruption measures, the establishment of Ramadan Sasta Bazaars, improvements in the education and health sectors, and initiatives aimed at supporting women, marginalized, and minority communities. She also announced plans to digitalize the province and establish IT cities, alongside launching a pilot project for free wifi in Lahore.

Addressing the needs of media workers, Maryam promised health and life insurance coverage. Her election not only breaks a gender barrier but also continues the Sharif family’s political legacy in Punjab, with her being the fourth member and first woman from the family to become Chief Minister.

The assembly session concluded indefinitely after Maryam’s speech, with her leadership marking a new chapter in Punjab’s governance amidst political challenges, including the SIC boycott and the delay in election proceedings.
