Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday commended the Pakistani military for its pivotal role in the country’s “peaceful ascent” and asserted that Pakistan is “destined to rise”.
According to the military’s press office, the Prime Minister’s remarks were made as he, alongside his newly-appointed cabinet, visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and met with the country’s senior military figures, including Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir.
The visit was an occasion for the Prime Minister and his cabinet to discuss issues related to national security, regional stability, and military readiness with the top brass of the military.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) disclosed that the discussions covered the current security landscape, the array of threats, responses to these threats, and ongoing operations against terrorism.
The Prime Minister and cabinet members lauded the professionalism, operational preparedness, and sacrifices of the Pakistani Army in the battle against terrorism and highlighted the military’s role in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and ensuring its peace and stability.
Prime Minister Shehbaz, who assumed office following the elections on February 8, pledged to ensure the armed forces have all necessary resources for maintaining operational readiness.
“Pakistan is destined to rise, and the indispensable role of the armed forces in Pakistan’s peaceful ascension is undeniable,” he was quoted by the statement.
The army chief, in return, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for visiting the GHQ and for the government’s trust in the military. He affirmed the army’s commitment to meeting the nation’s expectations and providing unwavering support to the government in tackling Pakistan’s security challenges.
The visit culminated with both civilian and military leaders renewing their pledge to safeguard national interests and to collaborate towards a prosperous and secure Pakistan.
Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister was greeted by the army chief and accorded a guard of honour. In a gesture of homage to the fallen, Prime Minister Shehbaz laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada.
