Pakistan’s golden boy of athletics, Arshad Nadeem, has once again made headlines after qualifying for the javelin throw final at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, being held in Gumi, South Korea. Arshad recorded an impressive throw of 86.34 metres in his first attempt during the Group A qualifying round — a mark that instantly secured his spot in the final.

Speaking after the event, Arshad shared his optimism:

“I was at the top in the qualifying round with a long throw. The final is tomorrow at 1:10pm Pakistan time. Everyone has always prayed for me — please do so tomorrow as well. Pray that I may raise Pakistan’s flag high. Pakistan Zindabad!”

This marks his first major international outing since his historic Olympic gold medal win in Paris last year, where he shocked the world with a monumental throw of 92.97 metres, becoming Pakistan’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medalist and the first Pakistani athlete to win an Olympic medal in track and field.

Rising Star Yasir Sultan Also Qualifies for Final

Alongside Arshad, another promising javelin thrower, Yasir Sultan, has also booked his place in the final. Competing in Group B, Yasir achieved a throw of 76.7 metres, comfortably placing himself among the finalists.

Sultan’s progression to the final showcases Pakistan’s growing talent pool in javelin and hints at the nation’s potential to dominate the event in coming years.

A Compact but Promising Pakistani Squad

The 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, running from May 27 to 31, feature a compact five-member Pakistani contingent, led by the globally recognised Arshad Nadeem. Despite its small size, the squad carries strong medal prospects.

Squad Members:

  • Arshad Nadeem – Javelin Throw
  • Yasir Sultan – Javelin Throw
  • Shajar Abbas – 400m Sprint
  • Mueed Baloch – 400m Sprint
  • Tameen Khan – 100m Sprint (Women)

Shajar, Mueed, and Tameen Represent on the Track

On the track side, Shajar Abbas and Mueed Baloch are competing in the men’s 400m events. Shajar, often hailed as Pakistan’s fastest sprinter, has consistently improved his timings over the past year and is set to challenge Asia’s top runners.

Mueed Baloch, known for his grit and stamina, adds valuable depth to Pakistan’s sprinting lineup.

Meanwhile, Tameen Khan, the only female athlete in the squad, will run in the women’s 100m sprint. Her selection marks a significant step forward for female participation in athletics in Pakistan, and the federation is hopeful about her breakthrough.

Arshad Honoured as Best Asian Athlete

Earlier this week, Arshad Nadeem was awarded the prestigious Best Asian Athlete Award by the Asian Athletics Association. The award ceremony was held in Gumi, South Korea, during the championship week.

The accolade celebrates Arshad’s stellar performances over the past few years, including his Olympic gold, Commonwealth Games gold, and multiple medals across the World Championships, Asian Games, and Islamic Solidarity Games. So far, his career tally includes:

  • 4 Gold
  • 1 Silver
  • 4 Bronze

Pakistan’s Medal History and Current Standings

To date, Pakistan has won 8 medals in the history of the Asian Athletics Championships:

  • 2 Gold
  • 3 Silver
  • 3 Bronze

With Arshad and Yasir in the javelin final, and promising athletes in track events, hopes are high for Pakistan to add to that tally in 2025.

As of now, China leads the medal table, with Japan in second place.

Final Word: All Eyes on the Javelin Final

With the javelin final scheduled for tomorrow at 1:10 PM (Pakistan time), all eyes will be on Arshad Nadeem and Yasir Sultan. Arshad is aiming to further cement his legacy as one of Asia’s — and the world’s — top throwers, while Yasir looks to make a strong statement as a rising star.

Support from the nation is pouring in, and the Pakistan Athletics Federation has called on the public to back the athletes as they aim for glory in Gumi.

Pakistan Zindabad!
