An unmanned aerial drone attack in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border resulted in the deaths of three US service members, with numerous others injured, according to President Joe Biden.

He attributed the attack to Iran-backed groups, describing them as radical militants operating in Syria and Iraq.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, marks the first fatalities of US troops in the region since the onset of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Biden pledged to continue the fight against terrorism and promised accountability for those responsible, specific details about the number of injured troops were not mentioned in the official statement.

CNN reported at least two dozen service members wounded. An unnamed US official said that approximately 34 personnel were under monitoring for potential traumatic brain injuries.

Pentagon has not disclosed the specifics of the injuries sustained.

Jordan’s government clarified that the attack targeted the US Al Tanf base in Syria, not on Jordanian soil, according to spokesperson Muhannad al Mubaidin.
