Earthquake

Earthquake tremors were felt across parts of Punjab on Tuesday, including Islamabad, Lahore and several other cities, with authorities reporting a moderate magnitude quake, the National Seismic Monitoring Centre said.

Tremors Across Multiple Cities

The tremors were also felt in Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhelum, Okara and Sheikhupura, prompting brief panic among residents, though no immediate reports of casualties or damage were received. The seismic monitoring centre said that the earthquake measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 18 kilometres. It said the epicentre of the quake was located in Gujranwala district.

Residents React

Residents in several cities reported feeling mild shaking before the tremors subsided. In Lahore and Islamabad, people rushed out of their homes and offices as a precautionary measure. Social media was quickly flooded with posts from citizens confirming the tremors in their respective areas.

No Aftershocks Reported

Officials did not immediately issue further details on possible aftershocks. However, disaster management authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious and follow standard safety protocols in case of any subsequent seismic activity.

Pakistan’s Seismic Vulnerability

Earthquakes are relatively common in Pakistan, which lies on a major seismic boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The country has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, including the 2005 Kashmir earthquake that killed over 73,000 people. Authorities routinely advise preparedness measures in urban centres, including earthquake drills and building code enforcement.

Safety Advisory

Residents have been urged to stay away from dilapidated structures and to keep emergency supplies handy. No evacuation orders have been issued thus far, and normal life has largely resumed across the affected cities. Monitoring agencies continue to track the situation and will provide updates if any further seismic activity is detected.
