A global coalition of more than 800 prominent figures — including leading AI researchers, technology pioneers, entertainers, and political leaders — has come together to call for an immediate ban on the development of superintelligent artificial intelligence. The initiative, led by the Future of Life Institute (FLI), urges that no AI system capable of surpassing human intelligence should be developed until there is a strong scientific consensus, reliable control mechanisms, and broad public approval.
Among the signatories are renowned AI experts such as Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, alongside technology figures like Steve Wozniak and Richard Branson. Public personalities including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also voiced their support, amplifying the global demand for responsible AI development.
The declaration highlights the serious risks of unchecked AI advancement — including human obsolescence, loss of control, erosion of civil liberties, and potential existential threats. The signatories emphasize that the current race among tech companies to create ever more advanced AI systems is moving faster than society’s ability to ensure their safety or ethical oversight.
By calling for a moratorium, the coalition advocates for strict safeguards, transparent governance, and a framework for public involvement before progressing toward any system that could potentially exceed human cognitive abilities.
This movement marks a turning point in the AI debate, signaling a shift from simply regulating AI tools to halting the pursuit of technologies that could outthink or outmaneuver humanity itself.
