Dave Musker, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Safety and Security Manager, shared his positive feedback on the security measures in place during the 2025 Champions Trophy held in Pakistan. Musker thanked the Pakistani police, Rangers, and military for ensuring “foolproof” security throughout the tournament. His comments came just before the second semi-final, which took place at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium between South Africa and New Zealand.
Acknowledging that some teams had expressed concerns about traveling to Pakistan before the start of the tournament, Musker stressed how these reservations had been addressed effectively. “This has been a brilliant tournament,” he said. “It will demonstrate a very positive image of Pakistan, its people, and its security institutions globally.” His words were a testament to the high level of professionalism and cooperation displayed by Pakistan’s security forces, who worked tirelessly to provide a safe environment for the players and ICC staff.
Successful Hosting Despite BCCI’s Refusal
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) successfully hosted the prestigious ICC tournament, which began on February 19, 2025. The tournament included 15 matches, with Pakistan’s home stadiums hosting a portion of the games, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosted matches under a hybrid model agreed upon with India. Despite concerns from certain quarters, the PCB managed to hold the tournament smoothly and safely.
However, in a significant pre-tournament development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that it would not be sending its national men’s cricket team to Pakistan. The BCCI cited security issues as their primary reason for the decision, which led to a diplomatic stand-off between the PCB and BCCI. As a result of the BCCI’s refusal, the final match of the tournament will take place in Dubai on March 9, 2025, featuring a showdown between India and New Zealand.

Pakistan’s Early Exit from the Tournament
Despite the successful hosting and smooth security arrangements, the Pakistan national cricket team, who were the defending champions of the Champions Trophy, had a disappointing run in the 2025 edition. Pakistan was placed in Group A alongside India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. They suffered back-to-back defeats in their opening matches, which led to their early elimination from the tournament.
The team’s last match, which was supposed to be against Bangladesh, was washed out due to rain, leaving Pakistan at the bottom of the points table with just two losses and no victories. This early exit was a major disappointment for Pakistani cricket fans, especially given the team’s strong performance in the previous edition of the Champions Trophy.
A Neutral Venue for the Final Match
The final of the 2025 Champions Trophy will take place in Dubai, marking a neutral venue for the highly anticipated clash between India and New Zealand. This decision reflects the ongoing tensions surrounding the tournament’s organization, particularly the standoff between the PCB and BCCI. Despite this, the tournament has been largely successful, with Pakistan managing to pull off an event that showcased their commitment to cricket and security, albeit with the unfortunate early exit of their own team.
