IMF loans are suffocating

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the IMF’s loans as “suffocating”. He suggested that the BRICS bank might increase lending to other countries with “different criteria” to stimulate their economies.

Lula expressed his desire for Argentina to become part of the BRICS group of emerging countries. He emphasized the importance of Argentina’s inclusion, given its struggle with foreign reserve shortages. During a live social media broadcast, Lula stated, “It is very important for Argentina to be in BRICS.”

Argentina is grappling with historical inflation, depleted foreign reserves, and debt obligations resulting from a $44 billion loan agreement with the IMF. Argentina had previously expressed its intention to join the BRICS bloc.

Lula also supported the idea of expanding the alliance to include other nations. He mentioned Indonesia as a potential addition. Addressing a business forum, he asserted that new partners would enhance BRICS’ global significance.

South African officials reported over 40 countries expressing interest in BRICS membership. Lula emphasized the intention for BRICS to be a multilateral institution, not an exclusive club.

Lula clarified that BRICS wasn’t meant to challenge the United States, the Group of 7 (G7), or the Group of 20 (G20). Rather, its purpose was to “organize” the Global South.
