ISLAMABAD: Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry urged the judiciary to review its rapidly declining reputation in the world rankings. He said that imporving image of the judiciary would be a big challenge for the next Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial.
Justice Umar Ata Bandial will take charge as new CJP on Wednesday (Feb 2, 2022) soon after retirement of CJP Justice Gulzar Ahmed. The notification for his appointment had already been issued by the law ministry on Jan 17. As per the law, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as Chief Justice after the retirement of the CJP.
Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry highlighted a question raised by Minister for Law Farogh Naseem while commenting on the SC’s judgement relating to Sarina Isa case: “If the judges are not answerable for the assets of their wives and children, then how the politicians and bureaucrats could be held accountable?”
“The judiciary needs evaluated its rapidly declining reputation in the world rankings. It will be a big challenge for new chief justice when he swears in,” Mr Chaudhry tweeted in an apparent reference to a report released last year by the World Justice Project (WJP), according to which Pakistan ranks 130 out of 139 countries on the rule of law index.
