Islamabad, 6 June 2025: The Inland Revenue Department AJK has set a new precedent in public revenue enhancement following the successful rollout of a state-of-the-art Point of Sale (POS) invoicing system across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), particularly in the commercial hub of Mirpur.
This digital transformation has dramatically increased tax receipts for the region’s exchequer, with authorities confirming a substantial surge in both sales and income tax collections within a year of the system’s deployment.
According to officials, the inland revenue department ajk implemented the POS system to monitor real-time retail transactions, resulting in a record-breaking boost in revenue generation. The department’s South Region Commissioner, Syed Ansar Hussain, noted that the technology-driven initiative led to a remarkable rise in monthly tax filings, indicating improved transparency and compliance among businesses.

“The introduction of POS has changed the revenue landscape entirely,” Hussain explained during a briefing to APP. “One notable footwear chain, which previously paid around Rs. 100,000 in sales tax monthly, is now contributing over Rs. 6 million since the system went live.”
In another case, a well-known clothing retailer that had routinely deposited between Rs. 150,000 to 200,000 per month before POS installation, is now paying Rs. 11 million in taxes. This exponential increase is echoed across multiple sectors, driving the annual rise in total collections to exceed Rs. 1 billion, officials said.
The sharp contrast in collection was particularly evident in the clothing, food, and footwear industries. “In March 2024, prior to POS integration, total tax from these sectors stood at Rs. 21 million. By March 2025, following the integration of 40 leading brands into the system, tax revenues skyrocketed to Rs. 154 million,” Hussain stated.
To ensure rapid and effective deployment, the department established a dedicated Task Force under the Commissioner’s direct oversight. Leveraging technology, the group coordinated through encrypted digital channels, including a specially managed WhatsApp group involving tax inspectors, excise constables, deputy commissioners, and IT personnel.
“The success of the inland revenue department ajk’s POS system is rooted in constant field monitoring and prompt enforcement actions,” Hussain remarked. “We sealed several non-compliant outlets shortly after the system’s official launch on February 11, 2025, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of AJK.”

He emphasized that the model employed in AJK, combining advanced IT tools with on-ground enforcement, can serve as a template for nationwide implementation by tax bodies such as the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA).
“This is not merely a revenue initiative; it’s a financial reform strategy,” Hussain concluded, expressing hope that the AJK POS framework will inspire similar success stories across Pakistan.
