ISLAMABAD – A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government Mi-17 rescue helicopter crashed in Sokai near Chengai Banda on Saturday, killing three people, amid ongoing emergency operations in flood-hit areas of Bajaur.
Helicopter Was on Flood Relief Mission
According to Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, the helicopter was on its way to Bajaur to deliver relief assistance to flood-affected communities when the incident took place.
KP Chief Minister stated that contact with the aircraft was lost due to adverse weather conditions shortly before the crash. He confirmed that the helicopter had been part of a coordinated relief effort, with another government aircraft currently engaged in operations in Buner district.
Rescue Efforts Underway at Crash Site
Following the crash, rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site. Authorities have recovered the bodies of all three deceased and transported them to a local facility. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash, though initial reports suggest poor visibility and bad weather played a major role.

Flash Floods Cause Widespread Destruction in Bajaur
Meanwhile, flash floods have caused massive damage in the Jabrarai area of Salarzai Tehsil, Bajaur. The powerful currents washed away roads, bridges, and homes, leaving hundreds of residents stranded.
Rescue officials reported:
- 21 confirmed deaths from various flood-related incidents
- Seven people missing
- Three injured victims receiving medical treatment in hospital
The search for missing persons is ongoing, with both local volunteers and rescue units working in challenging conditions.
Government and Community Response
The KP government has vowed to provide immediate relief to those affected by the twin tragedies of the helicopter crash and floods. Emergency shelters, food supplies, and medical teams have been deployed to Bajaur and other hard-hit areas.
Officials have urged residents in flood-prone zones to relocate to safer locations as monsoon rains continue. Local community leaders are also mobilising resources to assist displaced families.
Background on Mi-17 Helicopters in Rescue Operations
The Mi-17 helicopter, widely used in Pakistan for both military and civilian rescue missions, is valued for its cargo capacity and ability to operate in rugged terrain. However, challenging weather and mountainous landscapes in KP make flying particularly hazardous during the monsoon season.
This latest crash adds to concerns over aviation safety in emergency operations, particularly in high-risk, weather-affected regions.
Call for Urgent Infrastructure and Disaster Planning
Experts stress that the current devastation highlights the urgent need for better disaster preparedness, including early warning systems, stronger infrastructure, and expanded rescue capabilities. With climate change intensifying extreme weather events in Pakistan, both air and ground rescue operations face increasing risks.
