In response to recent media reports, Devajit Saikia, the newly-elected secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has clarified that no proposal has been received regarding Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s visit to Pakistan for events related to the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
Media Reports and the Potential Visit
Earlier this month, Indian media outlets reported that Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian men’s cricket team, was expected to travel to Pakistan ahead of the prestigious tournament. The reports suggested that the visit would involve participation in an all-captains photo shoot and a press conference where the team captains would share their expectations for the tournament.
The ICC’s Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Dubai from February 19 to March 9, 2025, will see the eight participating captains gathering for pre-tournament events. These engagements include media interactions and discussions, crucial for building excitement around the global cricket event.
BCCI’s Official Statement
Devajit Saikia, however, has firmly denied the rumors regarding Rohit Sharma’s visit, stating that the BCCI has not received any such proposal from the International Cricket Council (ICC). “We haven’t got any such proposal. This hasn’t been part of our discussions with the ICC,” Saikia clarified in an interview with an Indian newspaper.
He further emphasized the sensitivity of the situation, pointing out that any decision regarding such an important matter must be taken with careful consideration of its broader implications. “This is a very delicate situation and every step has to be taken after judging its repercussions. India has to find a compromise formula to solve the crisis since Pakistan will enjoy certain benefits by virtue of being the hosts,” Saikia added.

The Way Forward
As of now, the focus remains on ensuring the successful organization of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. While discussions around potential participation and travel plans continue to surface in media outlets, the official stance from the BCCI remains one of caution. The board’s leadership is working diligently to navigate the complexities of international cricket relations, especially given the sensitive nature of India’s involvement in the tournament held in Pakistan.
Both the BCCI and the ICC will likely continue to address these concerns as the tournament date approaches, keeping the best interests of the players, teams, and the global cricketing community at the forefront.
