Rain Breaks Heatwave Across Pakistan, More Showers Predicted

Islamabad, June 26, 2025: Rain across Pakistan has brought much-needed relief from intense summer heat. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts more showers and thunderstorms over the next two days.

In the past 24 hours, rain and thunderstorms hit Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Kashmir, and northeastern Balochistan. Several areas saw heavy downpours.

The highest rainfall (in millimeters) was: Kasur 71, Okara 67, Sheikhupura 54, Joharabad 49, Sargodha City 45, Multan Airport 43, Bahawalnagar and Sahiwal 37, Chakwal 36, Islamabad 35, Lahore Airport 34, Hafizabad and Khanpur 29, Narowal 25, Rahim Yar Khan 24, Lahore City 23, Faisalabad/Khanewal 17, Gujrat to Multan City 11, Mangla 10, Jhelum 09, Attock and Noorpur Thal 07, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh 05, Murree 02, Gujranwala 01.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Malam Jabba recorded 69, Parachinar 23, Charat 15, Saidu Sharif 10, Lower Dir, Takht Bhai, Kakul 05, and Balakot 04. Kashmir, Rawalakot recorded 11, Muzaffarabad Airport 10, Muzaffarabad City 06, and Garhi Dupatta 03. In Balochistan, Barkhan received 02 millimeters.

The highest temperatures on Thursday reached 46 degrees Celsius in Dalbandin, Sibbi, and Jacobabad. Nokundi, Rohri, and Mohenjo-Daro recorded 45 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department forecasts continued rain with strong winds and thunderstorms. These conditions are expected in southeastern/northeastern Sindh, Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northeastern/southern Balochistan. Isolated areas may see downpours, especially at night.

Rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms are also expected on Friday across Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh, and northeastern/southern Balochistan, with heavy downpours possible.

The PMD has warned of potential flooding and hazards from heavy rainfall between June 26 and 28. Torrential to extremely heavy rains may cause flash floods in seasonal streams and drains across Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, northeastern Punjab, and Kashmir.

Flash flooding is specifically expected on June 27 and 28. This could affect local and rain drains in Musa Khel, Barkhan, Khuzdar, Qalat, Dadu, and Qambar Shahdadkot.

Heavy rainfall is also likely to cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, Charsadda, and Peshawar. Additionally, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, and Karachi may experience urban flooding on June 27 and 28.

The department also warned of potential damage to daily life from strong winds and thunderstorms. These may harm weak infrastructure like electric poles, vehicles, and solar panels. Mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, and Kashmir face increased risks of landslides, which may affect road traffic.
