Amidst the backdrop of escalating inflation, residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) staged a protest by burning utility bills in the district of Kotli. In response to the aggravating inflation, AJK residents have declared a twenty-day sit-in protest against the added taxes imposed through utility bills.

Expressing their frustration with the rising cost of living, demonstrators collectively discarded utility bills totaling over Rs60 million. This act was accompanied by a declaration in a local mosque, asserting a collective decision to refrain from bill payment.

To address the mounting discontent and potential civil disobedience, AJK’s Prime Minister, Chaudhary Anwarul Haq, took the decision on Tuesday to suspend the implementation of increased utility bills. Additionally, he established a committee tasked with delivering recommendations to the cabinet within a span of 15 days. The aim of these measures is to alleviate the situation and prevent further escalation of public dissatisfaction.
