ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi today approved the resignation of SC Judge Ijazul Ahsan.

The President okayed the resignation on the advice of caretaker prime minister Anwarul Haq Kakar.

On Thursday, in a surprising turn of events, the Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, tendered his resignation, following in the footsteps of his colleague Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan’s decision to resign came in the wake of Justice Naqvi’s earlier resignation from the senior Supreme Court judge position.

Justice Ahsan formally submitted his resignation to President Arif Alvi on Thursday evening. Notably, he held the position of the third most senior judge in the Supreme Court and was slated to ascend to the role of Chief Justice of Pakistan in October 2024.

The abrupt resignations have added a layer of complexity to the unfolding situation, with Justice Ahsan having opposed the proceedings against Justice Naqvi.

Reports indicate that he did not participate in the Supreme Judicial Council meeting today, further emphasizing the internal dynamics within the judiciary.

According to sources, former judge Ijazul Ahsan was offended by the Supreme Judicial Council’s decision to continue its proceedings against Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi even though he resigned on Wednesday.

Ijazul Ahsan performed the supervision of Panama case verdict against PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif.
