In a dazzling display of power hitting, Priyansh Arya’s explosive 103 led Punjab Kings to an 18-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Mullanpur on April 8. CSK, chasing down a steep target, suffered their fourth consecutive defeat of the season in a match filled with dramatic twists.

Shreyas Iyer, who won the toss, chose to bat first, hoping to set a challenging target for CSK. Arya wasted no time, hitting a six off the very first ball of the innings. Despite two early wickets falling — Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer back in the dugout — Arya’s brilliance kept the scoreboard ticking. His aggressive play was evident as he took on R Ashwin, slamming him for a boundary and two sixes in the final over of the powerplay, bringing up his half-century off just 19 balls.

Arya’s Maiden IPL Century

The Punjab Kings were reduced to 83/5, with none of the top order managing to get into double figures. However, Arya and Shashank Singh refused to let up, continuing to attack relentlessly. Arya’s assault on Matheesha Pathirana was particularly remarkable, as he belted three consecutive sixes and a boundary, bringing up his maiden IPL century in just 39 balls — the fastest of the season.

His innings included 7 boundaries and 9 sixes, but the onslaught was eventually ended when Noor Ahmad dismissed him. Punjab Kings finished their innings at 154/6 in 13.4 overs. Shashank Singh’s valuable knock alongside Marco Jansen ensured a solid finish, guiding Punjab to a competitive total of 219/6.

CSK’s Chase Falls Short Despite Conway’s Poise

In reply, Chennai Super Kings started their chase strongly. Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway added 61 runs for the first wicket in just 39 balls, putting CSK on course for the target. However, Punjab Kings struck back with timely wickets, including Maxwell dismissing Ravindra and Lockie Ferguson removing Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Shivam Dube, who entered as an impact player, joined Conway in a crucial partnership. Together, they put on 89 runs, with Conway looking in sublime touch. The CSK opener top-scored with 69 runs before the partnership was broken when Dube was dismissed for 42, caught by Ferguson.

Dhoni’s Heroics Not Enough

As MS Dhoni walked in, fans hoped for a late surge from the CSK skipper. Dhoni responded by smashing two sixes in a row, giving CSK a glimmer of hope. However, in a surprising move, CSK retired Conway out, cutting short his well-crafted innings. Dhoni continued to fight, hitting another six off Arshdeep, but his cameo ended when he holed out to Yuzvendra Chahal on the first ball of the final over.

Punjab Kings held their nerve, clinching a thrilling 18-run victory, thanks to Arya’s explosive century and strong contributions from the bowlers. With this win, Punjab Kings kept their playoff hopes alive, while CSK’s struggle continued.
