The Punjab School Education Department has initiated the process of compiling lists of schools and teachers who have produced poor academic results in the recent 9th and 10th grade examinations. The move comes as part of the provincial government’s broader effort to raise the standard of education and improve accountability within the sector.

Teachers with Poor Results to Face Dismissal

Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, in a statement posted on social media Thursday, announced that teachers responsible for consistently weak student performance will be dismissed from their posts.

“For the first time, the School Education Department team is preparing lists of schools and teachers giving poor results in ninth and tenth grades. Teachers giving poor results will be dismissed from their jobs,” the minister stated.

Billions Spent, But Standards Still Lagging

Minister Hayat expressed dissatisfaction with the continued poor outcomes despite significant financial investments in the education sector. “Despite spending billions of rupees, poor results will not be tolerated,” he said.

He emphasized that accountability will not remain limited to individual teachers but will extend to schools across districts and tehsils. “I will hold the schools of my district and tehsil accountable,” the minister asserted.

Rewards for Teachers Achieving Good Results

Alongside punitive measures, the minister also announced that high-performing teachers would be recognized and rewarded. “A list of teachers giving good results is also being prepared. Teachers will also be rewarded for good results,” he noted.

This dual approach, combining accountability with recognition, aims to motivate educators while weeding out inefficiency from the system.

Education Reform Efforts in Punjab

The announcement signals a stronger push by the Punjab government to reform its public schooling system. Teacher accountability has long been cited as a key challenge, with repeated complaints about absenteeism, lack of motivation, and inadequate teaching quality.

By publicly declaring the dismissal of underperforming teachers, the government appears to be setting a new precedent in educational governance. Whether these measures will improve results in the long run remains to be seen, but the move has already generated debate among teachers’ unions and education experts.
