DOHA: Qatar expressed its dismay over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s purported comments regarding Qatar’s mediation role in the Gaza war. Netanyahu allegedly referred to Qatar as “problematic” in a leaked recording during a meeting with hostage families aired on Israel’s Channel 12 news on Tuesday.
Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, stated, “We are appalled by the alleged remarks attributed to the Israeli Prime Minister in various media reports about Qatar’s mediation role.”
Al Ansari emphasized that if the reported remarks were true, Netanyahu would be hindering the mediation process, seemingly prioritizing his political career over saving innocent lives, including Israeli hostages.
In the leaked recording, Netanyahu explained his reluctance to thank Qatar, considering it no different from the UN or the Red Cross. However, he expressed a willingness to use any mediator who could assist in bringing the hostages home.
The Israeli government has not yet commented on Qatar’s statement or confirmed the authenticity of the leaked recording. Qatar has played a crucial role as the primary mediator between Gaza’s governing Hamas movement and Israeli officials. In November, Qatar helped secure a seven-day ceasefire, resulting in the release of hostages on both sides.
Netanyahu further claimed in the recording that Qatar holds leverage over Hamas due to its financial support for the movement. He expressed frustration with the U.S. for extending its military presence in a base in Qatar.
Responding to these comments, the Qatari spokesperson urged Netanyahu to focus on the release of hostages instead of concerning himself with Qatar’s strategic relations with the United States.
