In the 11th match of the Champions Trophy 2025, South Africa defeated England by seven wickets with 125 balls to spare, securing a place in the Final Four of the tournament. England had set a target of just 180, but South Africa made quick work of the chase, reaching the target with ease. Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen were the heroes with the bat, both playing vital roles in guiding their team to victory.

South Africa’s Chase: A Strong Partnership Leads the Way

South Africa’s chase didn’t start smoothly as they lost both their openers early. Jofra Archer made early breakthroughs, dismissing Tristan Stubbs (duck) and Ryan Rickelton (27 from 25 balls), leaving South Africa at 47/2 in the powerplay. However, Klaasen and van der Dussen steadied the ship with an outstanding 127-run partnership that brought them closer to the target.

Klaasen was dismissed for a well-made 64 off 56 balls, which included 11 boundaries, just six runs shy of the target. Van der Dussen, who anchored the innings, remained unbeaten on 72 off 87 balls, which included six fours and three sixes, guiding South Africa to a comfortable victory. The Proteas wrapped up the chase in just 38.1 overs, with Klaasen and van der Dussen playing the key roles.

England’s Struggles: Early Collapse and Limited Contributions

England’s decision to bat first turned out to be a poor one, as they were skittled out for just 179 in 38.2 overs. The innings got off to a disastrous start when Marco Jansen ran through England’s top order, leaving them in disarray at 37/3 after 6.4 overs.

Joe Root (37 from 44 balls) and Harry Brook (19 from 29 balls) attempted to rebuild the innings with a cautious 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, both fell in quick succession, with Root bowled by Wiaan Mulder and Brook trapped by Keshav Maharaj. England’s middle order faltered, and the batting crumbled further as the team found itself at 129/7 in the 25th over.

England captain Jos Buttler (21 from 43 balls) tried to hold one end, but the lower order couldn’t provide him enough support. Buttler received brief support from Jofra Archer, with the duo adding 42 runs, but both were dismissed before they could take England to a more competitive total. Archer’s 25 runs from 31 balls was one of the few bright spots for England in a difficult outing.

South Africa’s Brilliant Bowling Display

South Africa’s bowlers, particularly Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder, were in fine form. Jansen took 3 wickets for 24 runs, while Mulder also bagged 3 wickets for 26 runs. Keshav Maharaj contributed with 2 wickets for 30 runs, and Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi each took one wicket. The combined efforts of South Africa’s bowlers ensured that England’s batting never got off the ground, despite some fight from Root and Buttler.

South Africa Progress to the Final Four

With this victory, South Africa topped Group B and secured a spot in the semi-finals, joining Australia from their group. England, already out of the race for a semi-final berth, will now look to reflect on their performance as they prepare for future competitions.

South Africa only needed to avoid a loss by 207 runs to ensure their qualification, and their comprehensive victory ensured they surpassed Afghanistan’s net run rate in the process.
