Adiala Jail Superintendent

ISLAMABAD: A special court granted former Prime Minister Imran Khan permission to communicate with his sons from prison on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Judge Abu Alhasnaat Zulqurnain directed the Adiala Jail superintendent to facilitate a telephone conversation between Imran Khan and his sons.

Attorney Sheraz Ahmad Ranjha informed the court that all prisoners are typically allowed to have phone conversations with their families, and these calls are typically permitted on Saturdays.

The judge took note of the fact that the Adiala Jail superintendent had presented jail Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). It indicated that phone calls are not allowed for individuals detained under the Official Secrets Act.

The lawyer argued that although the jail manual did not explicitly mention it, international phone calls are allowed under a judgment from the Federal Shariat Court.

Following this submission, the judge ruled in favor of allowing the phone call.

Additionally, the lawyer requested that a show-cause notice be issued to the jail superintendent at Attock jail, alleging that he had presented inaccurate information to the court.

Imran Khan is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail due to a case registered under the Official Secrets Act, commonly referred to as the “cipher case.”

This case accuses him of disclosing the contents of a ‘classified’ cipher that was sent during his tenure as prime minister, thus violating the Official Secrets Act.

Earlier, the indictment of Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his party’s Vice Chairman, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in the cipher case has been postponed.

A special court, established under the Official Secrets Act, adjourned the hearing until next week (Monday 23).

The hearing took place at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, where the court provided copies of the charge sheets to Imran Khan and Qureshi. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prepared the charge sheets against the PTI leaders.
