ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, along with Justices Mansoor Ali Shah, Aminuddin Khan, and Athar Minallah, upheld the death sentence of former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf in a “high treason case” dating back to 2019.
Back in December 17, 2019, a special court had sentenced the former ruler to death under Article 6 of the Constitution over his “unconstitutional” declaration of emergency in November 2007, a case filed during the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
In a prior hearing on November 29, 2023, the top court highlighted the need to hold accountable all involved in endorsing the martial law imposed by Musharraf on October 12, 1999.
Justice Athar noted that the judges who validated the martial law at that time should also face trial.
Chief Justice Isa emphasized the importance of learning from history, urging acknowledgment that past actions, even if not penalized, were wrong. He stressed the significance of recognizing past mistakes.
Justice Athar underscored the importance of truth, asserting that the judges validating martial law ought to face trial and receive fair treatment.
The sentiment expressed was that everyone should acknowledge the wrongful events of the past.
