Trump Holds Diplomatic Talks with Qatar Leaders During Asia Trip

US President Donald Trump held a high-level meeting with the Emir and Prime Minister of Qatar during a refuelling stop at Al Udeid Air Base en route to Asia. The stop highlighted Qatar’s continued influence in ongoing peace efforts across the Middle East, particularly in mediating the fragile Gaza ceasefire.

Upon arrival, the Qatari leaders joined President Trump aboard Air Force One for a private discussion. Trump commended Qatar’s diplomatic leadership, referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani as “a valued partner in building global stability.” Also in attendance was US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had recently concluded talks in Israel focused on sustaining the truce in Gaza.

Since the October 2023 conflict, Qatar has served as a vital intermediary between Israel and Hamas, working alongside Egypt, Turkey, and the United States to maintain peace and coordinate humanitarian efforts. Earlier in the week, Qatar’s Emir also hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to further discuss Gaza’s reconstruction and long-term stability.

President Trump’s Asia trip marks his first regional tour since returning to office in January. His schedule includes two major summits and bilateral meetings with key Asian leaders, including China’s Xi Jinping, to strengthen trade, security, and diplomatic partnerships.

Though brief, the Qatar stopover demonstrated Washington’s recognition of Doha’s growing role in shaping Middle East diplomacy and underscored the importance of US-Qatar cooperation in advancing regional peace.
