Trump Reveals GOP Congressman’s Private Health Battle

President Donald Trump disclosed during a Monday press conference that Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL), a 73-year-old Republican congressman, had been diagnosed with a terminal heart condition and was given only months to live before White House doctors intervened .

Speaking alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson at a Kennedy Center event, Trump revealed that Dunn had been told “he would be dead by June” due to a severe heart problem . The revelation caught Johnson off guard, with the speaker noting that the information “wasn’t public” .

How Trump Intervened

According to both Trump and Johnson, the president learned of Dunn’s condition through a conversation where the congressman expressed his commitment to continue serving despite his dire prognosis .

Trump described the moment: “He called to say that he was terminal, really bad heart. There’s nothing they can do. I said, ‘That’s bad.’ Number one, it was bad because I liked him. Number two, it was bad because I needed his vote” .

Johnson explained that after Trump personally phoned Dunn to thank him for showing up to work despite his health, the president offered to have Dunn examined by White House physicians . “Within a number of hours,” Johnson said, Dunn was at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for emergency surgery .

Trump added that doctors “gave him more stents, and more everything that you could have” .

A ‘New Lease on Life’

Johnson described Dunn’s remarkable turnaround, stating the congressman now “has a new lease on life” and “acts like he’s 30 years younger” . After his surgery, Dunn walked into a conference meeting, and colleagues “thought we’d seen a ghost,” Johnson recounted .

The speaker emphasized that Dunn is “thankful, and he thanks the president for his leadership and intervention” .

Political Implications

The revelation carries significant weight given the razor-thin Republican majority in the House, which currently stands at just a few seats . GOP leaders have been carefully monitoring members’ health, having already experienced one unexpected death in the last year .

Dunn had previously announced he would not seek reelection, though his office had made clear he had no intention of leaving his seat early despite his health challenges . His office has not commented on Trump’s public disclosure of his private medical information .

Who Is Neal Dunn?

Dunn, 73, represents Florida’s 2nd Congressional District. A physician by training, he has served in Congress since 2017. Prior to the president’s announcement, little was publicly known about his health struggles, though rumors had circulated following his decision not to run for reelection .
