Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has recently spoken out against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over new guidelines that limit family time during international cricket tours. Following India’s disappointing 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI introduced regulations that restrict players’ families to join them only after the initial two weeks of a tour that lasts over 45 days. For shorter tours, families are allowed to accompany players for up to one week.
Kohli, who has been an essential figure in Indian cricket for years, voiced his dissatisfaction with these new directives during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit ahead of the IPL 2025 season. He argued that emotional support from family during long and intense tours was vital for players’ well-being and performance.
The Importance of Family Support in Challenging Times
At the summit, Kohli shared his personal perspective on the importance of family support while touring with the national team. “It is very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to just come back to your family every time you have something intense, which happens on the outside,” Kohli said.
He further elaborated on the positive impact family time has on a player’s mental health, especially after tough losses or intense matches. “I do not think people have an understanding of what value it brings to a large extent. And I feel quite disappointed about that because it is like people who have no control over what is going on are kind of brought into conversations and put out at the forefront that, ‘oh, maybe they need to be kept away’.”
Kohli stressed that no player wants to “sit alone and sulk” after a poor performance on a tour, underlining how crucial family is in helping players maintain a sense of normalcy during these challenging times. For Kohli, the ability to return to family life, even briefly, allows him to reset, regain perspective, and return to the field with a clear mind.
Kohli’s Call for Normalcy and Balance in Life
Kohli emphasized that spending time with family brings balance and normalcy into a player’s life, which is crucial for mental well-being. “I want to be able to be normal. And then you can really treat your game as something that is a responsibility. You finish that responsibility, and you come back to life,” he explained.
He also highlighted that the emotional support from family helps players navigate different situations in their lives. “Like, there could be different situations happening in your life all the time. And that allows you to be absolutely normal. Not in a vague sense, but in a very real way that you finish your commitment, your responsibility, and then you come back to your house, you are with family, and there’s absolutely normalcy in your house and normal family life goes on.”

For Kohli, spending time with his family is a source of immense joy, and he made it clear that he would never miss the opportunity to do so whenever possible. “So, for me, that is absolutely a day of immense pleasure. And I would not miss any opportunities to go out and spend time with my family whenever I can,” he concluded.
Kohli’s Role in India’s ICC Men’s Champions Trophy Victory
Kohli, who has played a crucial role in many of India’s cricketing triumphs, recently contributed to the team’s victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy. He was the second-highest run-scorer for India in the tournament, amassing 218 runs across five matches. Kohli’s leadership and batting prowess were key to India’s success, and his contributions continue to make him one of the most prominent figures in world cricket.
With the upcoming IPL 2025 season on the horizon, Kohli is set to play for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The season kicks off with RCB’s opener against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 22, and Kohli will be hoping to bring the same level of dedication and skill to his franchise team that he has demonstrated for India over the years.
The Ongoing Debate: Family and Cricketing Life
Kohli’s outspoken comments on the BCCI’s new family guidelines have sparked further debate around the balance between professional commitments and personal life for cricketers. While the BCCI’s intention with the new rules is to maintain a focus on the players’ performances and the competitive nature of international tours, many, including Kohli, argue that emotional support is a key aspect of a player’s ability to stay grounded and perform at the highest level.
As the IPL season draws closer, Kohli’s comments will likely continue to resonate within the cricketing community, leading to more conversations about the challenges players face on long tours and the importance of having family by their side during these times. Kohli’s perspective on family time underscores the human side of the game, reminding everyone that even the best players need emotional support to perform at their peak.
