During a recent meeting in Beijing on Thursday, President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of deepening trust and expanding cooperation between China and Thailand in the face of growing global uncertainties. The remarks were made during a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, whose official visit to China marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Strengthening Strategic Ties Amid Global Changes
Xi called for both nations to enhance mutual trust, particularly in light of unprecedented global changes. He highlighted various projects, such as the high-speed railway that will eventually link Bangkok with southwestern China’s Kunming, and identified the digital economy and electric vehicles as key sectors for expanded collaboration.
“In the face of unprecedented changes not seen for a 100 years, China and Thailand should deepen mutual trust over strategic interests and firmly support each other,” Xi stated, according to China Central Television (CCTV).
His comments came shortly after the U.S. imposed new tariffs on Chinese imports, underlining the importance of strengthening economic and diplomatic relations between China and Thailand at a time when global trade tensions are on the rise.
Addressing Online Fraud and Safety Concerns
A significant issue discussed during the meeting was the growing concern over online fraud and safety, particularly in relation to Chinese tourists visiting Thailand. This issue gained prominence after Chinese actor Wang Xing was rescued from a scam center in Myanmar, where he had been lured by a fake acting job in Thailand.
Thailand, which depends heavily on Chinese tourism, is keen to address safety concerns and reassure Chinese visitors. Prime Minister Paetongtarn stressed that the safety of tourists was a top priority for her government. “Thailand is ready to work with China to suppress criminal activity that passes through Thailand,” she said, noting that both nations would collaborate on creating a warning system to prevent crime.
In response, Xi Jinping expressed appreciation for Thailand’s efforts to combat online gambling and telecom fraud, emphasizing the need for stronger law enforcement and judicial cooperation to ensure the protection of people’s lives and property.
Collaborative Efforts to Combat Crime
Thailand’s government has already taken steps to tackle these concerns. On Tuesday, the Thai government announced it would cut electricity to areas near the Myanmar border, aiming to curb the activities of scam centers operating in the region.
Xi voiced China’s support for these measures, recognizing their importance in safeguarding both local and foreign citizens. He urged both countries to continue cooperating in law enforcement efforts, underscoring the value of enhanced security and judicial ties to protect both nations’ citizens and maintain the safety of tourists.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
The meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Paetongtarn reflects a growing commitment to further strengthening the bilateral relationship between China and Thailand. As both nations face evolving global challenges, the strategic collaboration in key sectors such as transportation, technology, and crime prevention is poised to deepen, ensuring mutual benefits for both sides in the years to come.
With a shared vision for greater cooperation, China and Thailand are paving the way for a future that balances economic growth, technological advancement, and the safety of their citizens and visitors. As these discussions unfold, the world will be watching closely for further developments in this important and evolving partnership.
