The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on three players following Code of Conduct violations during the Asia Cup 2025, with Pakistan’s star fast bowler Haris Rauf receiving the most severe punishment.

ICC Announces Penalties

The governing body confirmed on Tuesday that Rauf will serve a two-match suspension while also being fined 30 percent of his match fee and receiving two demerit points. His teammate Sahibzada Farhan was awarded one demerit point, while India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav received a 30 percent match fee fine and two demerit points without facing suspension.

Controversial Hearing Details

The disciplinary hearing before match referee Richie Richardson featured intense exchanges that left the official notably surprised. When questioned about a contentious hand gesture displaying numbers, Rauf challenged the interpretation, asking Richardson to clarify the meaning attributed to it.

“I was merely acknowledging the fans; no alternative intent existed,” Rauf explained when pressed about repeating the gesture during match proceedings.

Players Defend Celebrations

Farhan defended his celebratory actions by citing cultural context, explaining that such expressions are traditional among Pakhtun communities during joyous moments. He referenced similar celebrations by prominent Indian cricketers in previous matches, questioning the inconsistent application of standards.

Richardson acknowledged the Indian contingent’s discomfort with the celebrations, noting that formal objections had been lodged by both players and the opposing board.

Impact on Pakistan Squad

The suspension deals a significant blow to Pakistan’s bowling attack, with Rauf sidelined for two crucial ODI fixtures. The talented pacer has been instrumental in Pakistan’s recent international campaigns, making his absence particularly challenging for team management.

The controversy underscores ongoing tensions surrounding player conduct and cultural expressions within competitive international cricket.
