Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senator Saifullah Abro has tendered his resignation from the Senate following his controversial decision to vote in favor of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, directly contradicting his party’s official stance.
Representing Sindh province since March 2021, the Larkana-based lawmaker found himself at odds with PTI leadership after supporting the landmark constitutional bill that his party had formally boycotted. His unexpected departure marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s ongoing political drama surrounding constitutional reforms.
The resignation came swiftly after Abro cast his vote alongside the government coalition, breaking ranks with fellow PTI senators who staged dramatic protests inside the chamber. Party sources confirmed that legal proceedings were being considered against the senator for violating party discipline before his resignation preempted such action.
The Senate successfully approved all 59 clauses of the historic 27th Constitutional Amendment through a decisive majority vote. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the motion, with Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani presiding over the highly charged session that witnessed intense political theater.
PTI senators demonstrated their opposition forcefully, tearing copies of the amendment bill and creating disruption throughout the proceedings. Opposition members congregated before the chairman’s dais, voicing their strong objections to the proposed changes.
Notably, Abro wasn’t alone in breaking party lines during the vote. JUI senators Ahmad Khan and Naseema Ehsan also supported the amendment, though without facing similar consequences from their party leadership.
This development underscores deepening fractures within Pakistan’s political landscape as constitutional reforms continue generating controversy and testing party loyalties across parliamentary divides.
