Modi Skips Malaysia Visit, Attends ASEAN Summit Virtually to Avoid Meeting Trump

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to attend the upcoming ASEAN-India Summit virtually instead of traveling to Malaysia in person. This move effectively rules out an anticipated face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is expected to be present at the summit.

In his official statement, Modi mentioned having a cordial conversation with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and expressed enthusiasm for strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through virtual participation. He also cited the timing of the Deepavali festival as one reason for attending remotely.

However, political analysts and opposition leaders argue that the decision goes beyond scheduling convenience. The development comes amid escalating trade tensions between India and the United States, particularly following Washington’s recent tariff measures targeting Indian exports. Observers suggest that Modi’s choice to skip Malaysia could be a calculated diplomatic move to avoid a potentially tense meeting with Trump until trade negotiations show progress.

India will still have an official presence at the in-person events, represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Modi’s absence marks a notable shift, as he has traditionally attended ASEAN summits in person as part of India’s “Act East” policy, which prioritizes engagement with Southeast Asia.

While the virtual attendance maintains India’s commitment to ASEAN cooperation, it may also signal a cautious diplomatic stance as New Delhi balances its regional partnerships and global relations.
