India has unveiled its 15-member squads for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England and the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The announcement came after a press conference hosted by Indian captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, where they revealed the details ahead of the major tournaments in Pakistan and the UAE.

Among the highlights of the squad, pacer Mohammed Shami has made a strong return after last featuring in an ODI during the 2023 World Cup final against Australia. His inclusion adds significant depth to India’s bowling attack, a crucial element as the team prepares for the challenges ahead. However, the participation of key bowler Jasprit Bumrah remains uncertain, as he is still recovering from a back injury, leading to his absence from the ODI squad for the England series.

Shami’s Return and Bumrah’s Injury Concerns

Mohammad Shami’s inclusion in the squad comes as a major boost for India’s bowling arsenal. Shami has been in action during various domestic competitions, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and selectors are confident he will be match-ready for the Champions Trophy 2025.

However, there is a cloud of uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s availability. Bumrah, who has been sidelined due to a back injury, is currently undergoing rehabilitation. The final decision on his inclusion in the Champions Trophy will depend on his fitness as the tournament approaches. In his absence, Harshit Rana has been brought into the squad to provide cover, though Bumrah’s role in the team could be pivotal if he makes a full recovery.

Surprise Omissions and Selection Strategy

The squad announcement came with some surprising exclusions, including fast bowler Mohammad Siraj and wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson. These omissions raised eyebrows, especially given their recent performances. In their place, Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav have returned to the lineup after missing recent fixtures.

Rohit Sharma explained the reasoning behind these selections, particularly the exclusion of Siraj. “Siraj is not there because we wanted Arshdeep to bowl at the back end in case Bumrah is not available. Siraj’s effectiveness is often tied to taking the new ball, and with Arshdeep and Shami in the squad, we had no option but to select bowlers who could handle all phases: the start, middle, and death overs,” said Rohit.

Additionally, four spinners have been included in the squad, a decision that has raised questions but also been defended by the team management. “It’s not just about picking spin bowlers for the sake of it. These are specialist all-rounders – Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja – who can contribute equally with both bat and ball,” Rohit added. “Sundar offers right-arm spin, Axar and Jadeja bring left-arm spin, and Kuldeep provides left-arm Chinaman, covering all bases.”

Champions Trophy 2025: A Major International Event

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a major cricketing spectacle, running from February 19 to March 9, with matches across three venues: Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in Pakistan, as well as Dubai in the UAE. The tournament will feature eight teams divided into two groups. Group A consists of Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, while Group B includes Afghanistan, South Africa, England, and Australia.

India’s first match will be against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai, followed by a high-stakes clash against Pakistan on February 23, also in Dubai. The team will play its final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2 in Dubai. The final will be held in Lahore, although if India qualifies, it will be moved to Dubai as a contingency plan.

Security and Venue Arrangements for Champions Trophy

With the tournament being held across multiple venues, the security arrangements are crucial. Pakistan will host 10 matches, while the UAE will host four, including all of India’s group-stage games and the first semi-final. A reserve day has also been scheduled for the final to accommodate any potential weather disruptions, reflecting the significance of the tournament in international cricket.
