Indian tax authorities today conducted a raid at the BBC’s office in New Delhi. The tax authorities confiscated all phones, a BBC journalist told media on Tuesday.
The taxmen raid the BBC office at few weeks after British Broadcasting Corporation aired a documentary that exposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“There’s income tax raid in office, they’re confiscating all phones,” the employee said.
When the taxmen raided the office, police prevented people from entering or leaving the BBC office.
“There is government procedure happening inside the office,” an official said.
In January 2023, BBC broadcaster aired a documentary claiming that Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat state at the time, directed police to ignore sectarian riots there in 2002.
The violence led to killing of 1,000 people mostly members of the country’s Muslim minority.
India’s government blocked the BBC videos and related tweets soon after the release of documentary.
Defying the government’s efforts, the University student groups arranged viewings of the documentary.
