Conflict Intensifies as Ceasefire Collapses
The United States and Iran have escalated military attacks following the collapse of an interim ceasefire deal, with the US completing an eighth straight night of strikes against Iranian targets. The conflict has raised fears of a return to all-out war as both sides intensify operations across the Gulf region.
US Personnel Casualties and Continued Strikes
US Central Command confirmed that two American military personnel were killed in Jordan following an Iranian attack, with a third service member reported missing in action. These casualties bring the total number of US service members killed since the conflict began to 16, with more than 420 wounded. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated: “Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”
The latest US airstrikes, conducted at President Donald Trump’s direction, targeted Iranian coastal surveillance facilities, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities. The attacks aim to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran Suspends Commitments, Launches Counterattacks
Iran has suspended its commitments to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stating: “We have also suspended our commitments; we are not implementing them, and we are busy defending the country.”
Iranian forces have launched counterattacks targeting US assets across the region, including facilities in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain. Kuwait reported intercepting Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, with some injuries reported among firefighters and oil sector workers. Saudi Arabia’s early warning system issued alerts in Al-Kharj and Yanbu following what sources described as the first Iranian missile attack on the kingdom in more than three months.
Supreme Leader’s Warning and Regional Impact
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned that US actions have shown Trump’s signature is “utterly worthless and devoid of credibility,” cautioning of “even heavier costs and further humiliation” for the United States.
The conflict, which began when the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in late February, has caused major disruptions to global energy supplies and triggered a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz. The European Union and Gulf states have called on Iran to immediately halt all attacks and interference with maritime navigation, keeping the strait open without conditions or fees.
