Islamabad, July 7, 2025: The Sindh government has suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) following the tragic collapse of a six-storey building in Karachi’s Lyari, which claimed 27 lives and injured 8 others.
Speaking at a press conference, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon, accompanied by Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar and Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, confirmed that the chief minister ordered an FIR against those responsible and directed immediate action.
Saeed Ghani slammed the SBCA for its failure to prevent illegal constructions and admitted the authority has repeatedly failed in its duties. He noted that complicated ownership structures in multi-unit buildings hinder effective accountability.
Ghani said that despite demolition drives, SBCA’s performance is under scrutiny. He proposed transferring demolition responsibilities to another authority and called for urgent legal reforms to impose stricter penalties, including imprisonment for illegal builders and cancellation of their national ID cards.
The collapse occurred on July 4 in Lyari’s Baghdadi area. After a multi-day operation, rescue teams recovered all victims from the debris, and the site has now been sealed to prevent further hazards.
