Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir has indicated that Pakistan’s general elections are slated to take place before March 2024.

The statement made to VOA Urdu was corroborated by Pakistani-origin businessman Tanveer Ahmed, who generously donated $9 million for IT development at the National University of Sciences & Technology.

Inter-Services Public Relations issued a statement affirming that General Munir addressed misconceptions regarding special screenings, visa denials, and detentions during the interaction.

During his ongoing US visit since December 10, COAS Munir met key US government and military officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense General Llyod J Austin (retired), Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, Deputy National Security Adviser Jonathan Finer, and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q Brown.

According to Pakistan-origin businessman Tahir Javed, the elections might experience minor logistical delays, but they are assured to occur before the Senate elections in March. Tahir Javed relayed the army chief’s message in an interview with VOA, conducted via video link.

He elaborated on the December 14 meeting in Washington where General Munir engaged with the overseas Pakistani community, discussing various topics spanning the economy, security, information technology, and agriculture over a four-hour session.

Furthermore, the US administration expressed a positive stance on its relationship with Pakistan, emphasizing the intention to enhance cooperation in regional and security matters.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted Pakistan’s status as a major non-NATO ally and a NATO partner during a December 18 press briefing.
