Aimee Lou Wood, best known for her role in Sex Education, is being candid about her unique and intense experience filming The White Lotus season three. Wood plays Chelsea, a yoga instructor and girlfriend to an older man, portrayed by Walton Goggins, in the hit HBO show. The season was filmed over a span of seven months at a luxury resort in Thailand, and Wood described the entire process as a “social experiment.”
Living and Filming in a Luxury Hotel: A Unique and Extreme Experience
Wood explained that filming at the same location where they were living created a surreal environment, almost as if the actors were living in their own world, separated from reality. “Living in a hotel that we also film in? It was like a social experiment,” she told The Guardian. She added, “In a way I will never, ever forget. I will never have an experience like that again. It was so extreme.

The constant shift between personal life and filming created a unique and intense atmosphere that Wood will never forget. The luxury setting and stunning views of Thailand, however, did bring moments of joy and awe. “The fun bits were unbelievable, so special. The ocean, the landscape, it was majestic,” she said, also praising the show’s creator, Mike White. “Mike is a genius. Everyone involved is amazing.”
The Struggle of Blurring the Lines Between Character and Self
Despite the beauty and the high production value, Wood revealed that the experience was mentally and emotionally demanding. She recalled a moment that exemplified the difficulty of separating her character from herself. “One day, I was having my hair done and Miia [Kovero, the hair and makeup artist] was like, ‘You need to go home. I don’t know who I’m talking to anymore, Aimee or Chelsea.’ I’d completely abstracted,” Wood admitted.
As an actor, it’s common to become immersed in the character, but this particular experience pushed the boundaries, to the point where Wood couldn’t distinguish herself from Chelsea, her role in the show. “Everyone becomes their character to an extent, but I didn’t even know who I was,” she reflected.
From Sex Education to The White Lotus Season 3
Wood’s journey to The White Lotus comes after her breakout role in Sex Education, a show that earned her a BAFTA award and widespread recognition. Now, in The White Lotus, Wood enters a much more dramatic, high-stakes world compared to the coming-of-age comedy-drama of Sex Education. Her transition into the world of The White Lotus has been a significant step in her career, and she’s clearly taken it all in with the same passion and dedication that made her such a standout on Sex Education.
The Extreme and Rewarding Nature of Filming on Location
Filming on location in Thailand posed its own set of challenges, from the grueling nature of long shoots to the psychological effects of constantly living where one is working. However, Wood emphasized that these extreme conditions also resulted in unforgettable memories and experiences. The natural beauty of the Thai landscape and the immense talent of the cast and crew made it a memorable and rewarding experience for the actress, despite the mental toll it took.
