Two of Pakistan’s leading airlines—Airblue and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)—have officially applied to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to resume direct flights to the United Kingdom, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move comes shortly after the UK government lifted a five-year ban on Pakistani carriers, following significant improvements in the country’s aviation safety standards.

Airblue Eyes August Launch for Islamabad–Manchester Route

Private airline Airblue is preparing to launch direct flights between Islamabad and Manchester as early as August 2025, pending final regulatory clearance. The airline has submitted the necessary documentation to UK aviation authorities and is awaiting approval to begin operations.

If granted, this would mark Airblue’s first direct UK service since the imposition of the ban in 2020 and would offer passengers a valuable alternative to Middle Eastern transit hubs.

PIA Gears Up for Manchester Flights Using Boeing 777 Fleet

Meanwhile, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has also submitted its application to resume flights to the UK. The national carrier plans to restart operations with three weekly flights to Manchester, using its Boeing 777 aircraft.

PIA has begun logistical and operational preparations in anticipation of a positive response, including crew scheduling, ticketing updates, and coordination with UK airport authorities.

UK Lifts Aviation Ban on Pakistani Carriers

The renewed interest in UK routes follows the removal of Pakistan from the UK’s air safety blacklist, a decision welcomed by the Pakistani aviation sector and diaspora communities. The blacklist was imposed in 2020 after concerns raised by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regarding pilot licensing practices in Pakistan.

The British High Commission in Islamabad confirmed the decision, with High Commissioner Jane Marriott praising the progress made by Pakistan’s aviation regulators.

“I look forward to traveling with Pakistani airlines,” said Marriott. “This is the result of joint cooperation and strong commitment to improving safety standards.”

Wider Impact on Pakistani Travelers and Diaspora

The resumption of direct UK flights is expected to have a significant impact on travel between the two countries, particularly benefiting the Pakistani diaspora in northern England, where cities like Manchester have large South Asian populations.

Restoring direct routes also strengthens economic ties, simplifies travel for students and business professionals, and provides a boost to tourism and trade.

Next Steps and Industry Outlook

With applications submitted, both Airblue and PIA are now in a waiting period as the UK CAA reviews their requests. The process involves evaluating safety records, aircraft conditions, crew training standards, and compliance with international aviation regulations.

Should approvals be granted, flights could begin as early as August, marking a major step forward for Pakistan’s reentry into European airspace and offering travelers greater convenience and choice.
